Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride
|
Detroit, Michigan - The Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride stops for a rally in Detroit on its way to Washington and New York. Inspired by the civil rights Freedom Riders of the 1960s, immigrant workers boarded buses from nine cities to tour the country to campaign for the rights to apply for citizenship, to reunify their families, and to organize unions without regard to legal status. The "CEB's" in the sign are the Comunidades Eclesiales de Base, from Chicago and Waukegan, Ill., which are modeled on the liberation theology Christian base communities that flourished in Central America and Brazil.
