Indians Exercise Their Right Under the 1794 Jay Treaty Allowing Free Passage Between the USA and Canada
|
Detroit, Michigan - Dennis Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement, speaks as AIM members prepare to set out in canoes to cross the Detroit River from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario. Their aim was to enforce the terms of the 1794 Jay Treaty, which gave Indians in the U.S. and Canada the right to move freely between the two countries. The Coast Guard of both countries watched the group, but did not interfere with the crossing.
