The Fernald Preserve, a Former Uranium Processing Site
|
Harrison, Ohio - The Fernald Preserve, a nature preserve created following the $4.4 billion cleanup of the heavily-contaminated site. The Fernald Feed Materials Production Center processed most of the uranium used in America's nuclear weapons until it was closed in 1989. The mound beyond the telephone poles contains 3 million cubic yards of low level radioactive waste. The small sheds at its base are part of a system for collecting water that leaches from this debris for treatment at an on-site building.
