Residents Oppose Plan to Allow More Pollution from Oil Refinery
|
River Rouge, Michigan - Residents of neighborhoods surrounding Detroit's Marathon Petroleum refinery speak at a state Department of Environmental Quality public hearing, opposing a proposal to allow the refinery to discharge higher quantities of sulfur dioxide and other pollutants. Marathon says it needs the change to be able to produce lower-sulfur gasoline. Carla Poole, a letter carrier, said, "I don't want to be prejudiced, but it's about income." The area around the refinery, zip code 48217, is low-income, and is the most polluted in the state.
