Detroit Teachers Protest Public School Conditions
|
Detroit, Michigan - Public school teachers rally as a judge hears the school district's request for an injunction to stop teacher sick-outs. Teachers have been calling in sick to draw attention to big class sizes, deteriorating school buildings, and the lack of supplies. The Detroit Public Schools have been run by state-appointed emergency managers for most of the past 15 years, during which enrollment has declined, class sizes have increased, and the district's debt has soared. ("23" is the number of teachers named in the district's injunction request.)
