Residents Oppose Plan to Allow More Pollution from Oil Refinery
|
Detroit, Michigan - Rashida Tlaib speaks at a Detroit city council public hearing, opposing Marathon Petroleum's request to discharge higher quantities of sulfur dioxide and other pollutants from its oil refinery. Marathon says it needs the change to be able to produce lower-sulfur gasoline. The low-income area near the refinery, zip code 48217, is already the most polluted in Michigan. Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality, which is largely responsible for the water contamination crisis in Flint, will make the decision on Marathon's request.
