Residents Oppose Plan to Allow More Pollution from Oil Refinery
|
Detroit, Michigan - A standing-room only crowd of residents from the neighborhood near Marathon Petroleum's oil refinery attend a Detroit city council public hearing, opposing a proposal to allow the refinery to discharge higher quantities of sulfur dioxide and other pollutants. Marathon says it needs the change to be able to produce lower-sulfur gasoline. The low-income area, zip code 48217, is already the most polluted in Michigan. Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality, which is largely responsible for the water contamination crisis in Flint, will make the decision on Marathon's request.
