Community Rallies To Save Kronk Recreation Center
|
Detroit, Michigan - Retired boxer Thomas ("Hit Man") Hearns (wearing hat) joins residents of a west side Detroit neighborhood in a rally to save the legendary Kronk recreation center from being closed. The city of Detroit plans to close Kronk and eight other recreation centers to help reduce a $186 million budget deficit. Kronk's boxing program for children age 8 and up has produced champions such as such as Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, Milton McCrory, Jimmy Paul, and Duane Thomas. To the left of Hearns is 16-year-old LaTonya King, a rising star in the women's boxing world. King has been training at Kronk since she was 11.
