Cambodian Immigrant Fears Deportation After 33 Years in USA
|
Rosharon, Texas - Cambodian immigrants Patty Ly, 50, and Sompong Ly, 48, grow water spinach in their south Texas greenhouses. They are part of a community of Cambodian refugees who settled in south Texas in the early 1980s after fleeing the Khmer Rouge. The couple has a 7-year-old son, but they fear that the government will deport Sompong because of some trouble with the law 17 years ago. The couple has not hired an immigration lawyer because "it costs too much," says Patty. "All we can do is pray." The community is struggling after Hurricane Harvey flooded their community, damaging or destroying many homes.
