Image Description: | Neosho, Missouri - The 1872 Neosho Colored School, attended by George Washington Carver from 1876-1878. Until 1865, it was illegal in Missouri to teach African-Americans, enslaved or free, to read and write. The state's 1865 constitution required school districts to educate all children, but required separate schools for white and black. The building is now on the National Register of Historic Places. |
