Image Description: | Phoenix, Arizona - A hiker meditates in the late afternoon sun at the top of Piestewa Peak. The mountain is inside the Phoenix city limits. The trail to the top is steep, rocky, and crowded, drawing hundreds of hikers per day. Originally called Squaw Peak, the mountain was renamed for Lori Piestewa, the first Native American woman to die in combat in the American military. Piestewa was killed in Iraq in 2003. © Jim West |
