Detroit Residents Remember Bhopal Chemical Disaster by Picketing Hazardous Waste Site in Their Community
|
Detroit, Michigan - On the 19th anniversary of the chemical disaster that killed thousands in Bhopal, India, members of a poor, mostly African-American community in Detroit picketed a nearby toxic waste site. Canflow, a hazardous waste company, was allowed for years to import hazardous waste from Canada and dump it in the community's sewer system. The residents were poisoned when their sewers repeatedly backed up, flooding their basements with Canflow's discharges. Many are suffering health problems.
