Residents of Low-Income Neighborhood Protest Medical Waste Incinerator
|
Hamtramck, Michigan - Residents of the largely-immigrant community of Hamtramck and African-Americans from nearby Detroit protested a plan by Michigan Waste Services to burn medical and low-level radioactive waste in its incinerator. The protesters carried signs in English and Bengali. They noted that the state has sued Michigan Waste Services for excessive mercury emissions and other violations. The protest was organized by the Hamtramck Environmental Action Team and supported by the Sierra Club.
