Florida Tomato Pickers Ask McDonald's To Increase Wages
|
Detroit, Michigan - Members of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers visit a McDonald's restaurant on the campus of Wayne State University in their campaign to raise wages for Florida tomato pickers. The CIW wants McDonald's to pay one cent more for every pound of tomatoes that they buy. Farmworkers currently earn 40 to 45 cents for every 32-pound bucket (such as the one shown) that they pick. At that rate, a farmworker must pick two tons of tomatoes to earn $50 in a day.
